| NEWSLETTER Vol. I July - August 1999 | |
Chairman's Note I am indeed happy to see that we now have own Newsletter which would act as an information channel for all our members. Credit and appreciation must go to the members of the Executive Committe especially our Editor, for their efforts and valuable time spent to produce this inaugural issue of "MNAWF Newsletter". My special thanks to all of you. Since the launch of our logo on 27th February this year, our membership has increased to 95 members. This is the result of our participation in pet shows/exhibitions in which we expect to be involved again this year. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new members and thank all founder members for their continued support and assistance. Our focus this year is to create public awareness on proper care and nurturing of pets towards responsible pet ownersip and the fostering of healthy human/animal interaction. In this newsletter we have included some activities that we plan to undertake this year. I encourage all members to participate in these activities that would provide an avenue for you to be part of the vision we all envisage - a caring Malaysian society, for the benefit of our fellowmen and animals. You may have heard that there have been some cats and dogs in the infected pig farms that have been tested positive for Nipah virus and have been culled wih the pigs. We have been informed that some pet owners have become quite anxious about the status of their pets. We would like to assure them that if they are not located near known positive pig farms, they have no cause to worry. However, if you have reasons to believe that your animals have been exposed, we would appreciate if you inform the nearest Department of Veterinary Services for further action. The outbreak also clearly shows that much has to be improved among them, the need to provide education for our farmers/livestock owners on proper care and handling of livestock to help control sickness and disease. As breeders, their concern should go towards the animals that provide their livelihood. Change in attitudes and traditional methods that are incorrect is definetely required. Although this change cannot be instituted overnight, a start should be made to set things moving in the right direction. My best wishes to all members. |
