Dog Bite Prevention

  • Be careful not to tease or disturb a dog even if it is behind a gate or fence.
  • It is better not to go near dogs that are chained up.
  • If you come across a stray dog or one without its owner present, you should not try to touch or pat it.
  • If a dog comes near you and starts barking, stand very still and be very quiet. Look away from the dog and do not run or scream.
  • Dogs may get upset if disturbed when they are eating.
  • Dogs need to sleep too. They do not like to be disturbed when they are sleeping.
  • Do not stare into a dog's eyes. It will think you are trying to challenge it.
  • We may only pat a dog if we have received permission from the dog's owner.
  • Only play with a dog if the owner is watching.
  • Avoid playing with a dog with a litter of puppies, especially while the mother is still feeding them.
  • Try not to be too aggressive or get dogs over-excited when you play with them.
