|
"Children & Pets" program launches Pet Care Education for Schools The above program held at MIPE 2002 on 15 March turned out to be an enjoyable experience for about 250 school children and children from homes for the disabled run by the Selangor Welfare Council. The primary schools that are participating in the school program are SK Bukit Damansara, SK Jalan Semenyih (2), SJK(C) Serdang Baru (1), SK Sri Petaling and SJK(T) Vivekananda. Although the program will be introduced initially in these five schools this year it will later be expanded to include more schools in order to benefit as many children as possible. Activities will include pet interaction sessions, educational talks and videos, art, drama and field trips to zoos, agricultural parks and animal welfare shelters, all designed to make learning creative and enjoyable. SJK(C) Serdang Baru (1) emerged the winners of the art competition entitled "My Favourite Pets" for Standard 1-3 and SK Bukit Damansara won the essay writing competition entitled "My Pet Is Our Family Member" for Standard 4-6. The competitions were carried out in the five schools for a total of 1,500 children. On hand to present the prizes at the Children & Pets program was Tuan Hj. Markom bin Giran, Deputy Director-General for Student Affairs, Schools Department, Ministry of Education, who also presented the manual of the school program to representatives of the five schools. The pet expo had much to offer its visitors with a petting zoo featuring deer, lambs, baby ostriches, rabbits and ponies, a huge display of beautiful and colourful varieties of ornamental fish, imported birds such as black swans and wood ducks and a tropical rainforest display by Zoo Negara that included tortoises, snakes and baby orang-utan. The Children & Pets program received support from the organisers of MIPE 2002, on venue and tickets and Mac Food Services, supplier for McDonald's, on refreshments for the children. |
