Malaysian orangutan to regain vision after successful cataract surgery

Summary: An orangutan is expected to have improved vision after successfully undergoing cataract surgery Wednesday, the world's first ever such operation on a great ape, a wildlife official said. The 19-year-old orangutan named Aman is gradually recovering after the two-and-a-half-hour surgery on both his eyes at the Matang Wildlife Center in Sarawak state on Borneo island, said Sarawak Forestry spokesman Zulkifli Baba Noor.

Keeping of dogs as pets
Summary: Following a few recent mishaps involving dogs, local municipal councils are planning to implement a ‘Meaningful Licence and Canine Citizen Relationship Programme’ for owners of pet dogs. This would teach owners the responsibility of having a dog, while pets would be taught obedience and socialisation. A proposal is being worked out with the help of various animal welfare bodies.
